So far the BEST Mexican restaurant here probably a toss up between LA COCINA. La Cocina is 40 mins away though and in a suburb setting". Maddies is an EXCELLENT TEXMEX that offers many beers and even an ICE CREAM BAR. Will be back weekly!! Fajita platter w shrimp is awesome for 12$.

The food here is very good and well prepared. The staff is friendly and didn't mind that old friends were catching up. For some reason there is no ambiance in the background. Talk about creating uncomfortable silent situations. I'm no boring chump just trust me. Every word said by anyone is heard around the entire restaurant.

The best Mexican I've had in the area. Nice staff. Good prices. Fresh ingredients and dishes seem to be from scratch. I got 2 carnitas tacos, a tamale, and a drink for less than $10. I'll be back for sure!

This place is awesome...hands down best Mexican food in town. We visit once a week. Tacos are delicious and reasonably priced. Everything on the menu seems homemade.

Everything we ate here was delicious. The carnitas plate was incredibly tasty!!!! The shrimp poblano chile relleno was the best chili relleno I've ever had. My bf loved his super burrito. The beef poblano chili relleno was ok but still good. It was just so blah compared to their amazing shrimp relleno! They also have lots of different mexican beers, Sangria, Margaritas & wine. We are definitely coming back here again.

So..good but not the greatest I have ever had. I felt I ordered the wrong thing (a sandwich- I can't remember the name). I did have one of the tamales and those were really good just could be warmer. I felt our food came out cold and the rice was really dry. Ice cream was also a bummer. No homemade custard here. 3 stars because I would go back for the tamales and hope they would be hotter. Also their chips and salsa was very good.

I really want to love this place. Yelpers sure seem to. For someone who isn't in love with Mexican food, maybe it's great. It's definitely a hole in the wall. And quiet-too quiet- there is no music. There was one other table when we went and we felt like we were in a library. The good- The service is always friendly and usually not a long wait for the food. But what a disappointment-food is bland, and the ingredients look and taste cheap. The salsa is ok, just OK. I ordered a chicken quesadilla with rice and beans. One tiny portion of each came with my tiny quesadilla, and they all lacked flavor, depth and quality. I didn't order any dessert, they do have a nice selection of ice creams. I gave one star for cleanliness and one for service. Bottom line, the price doesn't match the caliber of the food. We won't be back :(

Went here for lunch and the food was authentic and fresh. My family enjoyed fajitas, banana wrapped tamales, tortas, and good service. I would defiantly give this place my business again. We met the owners, they were very pleasant and inquired as to the quality of the food and service before leaving.

This was our first visit, and all I can say is "wow!" This is an excellent restaurant. It is a small, hole in the wall place that is big on taste and quality. Everything was homemade, and the staff was pleasant. I will definitely be back the next time we are in Panama City.

My gosh this place is great, not sure what some of the others are reviewing...food was amazing. We had the shrimp cocktail, carnitas, enchiladas, fajitas, chile rellano, and tamales. Everything was made from scratch and phenomenal. So good, we were wowed! We're from Texas and we know Mexican food, this is the real deal. This family run business has it figured out. Great food, great service, great experience.

Great place for authentic Mexican food, followed by a scoop of ice cream. My husband loved the burrito and I enjoyed the enchiladas. Will definitely be back soon.

What can i say. If you haven't been in a while, the menu is actually evolving. Much more authentication with home made tortillas, pork ribs simmered in house made tomatoe sauce, excellent beef tongue. Prices are very reasonable.

We ate here because the first place we were going to downtown had a long wait. Big menu, with low prices. Dining room was full by the time we left and the one server was doing a pretty good job keeping up with everyone. Everything we had was OK, but we prefer Valerio or El Jalisco if we are specifically going out for Mexican.

Wow, I think that Maddie's has really improved since Mark N.'s visit. This is more authentic Mexican taqueria now than Tex-Mex. Or maybe it's a bit of a hybrid. Maddie's has really evolved since its beginnings as a custard shop several years back. The menu now has a mix of Tex-Mex favorites as well as taqueria standbys like tacos al carbon and carnitas. In my case, I chose the carnitas. First, of course, came the chips and salsa, which were both good if not memorable. The carnitas were served with flour tortillas and the normal toppings (lettuce, pico, sour cream) but what stood out was that the pork used for the carnitas was SO good - tender, flavorful, generously portioned. Just great. Service was solid, if not memorable. They also offer Mexican Coke and other Mexican beverages for sale. In short, given the dearth of restaurants in downtown, Maddie's is a solid choice, particularly since it is the only Mexican / Tex-Mex food in the downtown area.

My husband and I were pleased with our lunch at Maddie's. I had the Chimi Plate and he had the Super Burrito. He's still talking about how much he enjoyed his lunch. The Super Burrito packed some heat which pleased him greatly. The service was good and the food was prepared promptly. Nice little hole in the wall and you can enjoy ice cream afterwards. We look forward to eating there again.

Mediocre, very highly Americanized, greasy pseudo-Mexican restaurant.. This is a sit down place in downtown Panama City; a walkable area near the Saint Andrews Bay with a number of restaurants and shops and a couple bars. I entered this place this past November (2010) because I was at the First Fridays event they have here most of the year (except winter) where the whole downtown area turns into a big block party with live bands and lots of food vendors.. It was really cold that night and I saw they have hot chocolate so went inside. The hot chocolate was probably from the powder you buy at the grocery.. Nothing special about that. The food was very disappointing for me, I much prefer authentic Mexican food.. If you like greasy Americanized Mexican food (things like chimichangas and fried ice cream) than this might be an OK option for you.. It is the only "Mexican" place downtown, or should I say the only place labeled as "Mexican". If you have a car and want real Mexican food, drive to Velerios or La Michoacana Latin Market, they are both on US 98 only 10 minutes away. If you are on foot, I guess this is the option you are stuck with. It is palatable, but nothing to be excited about based on my experience..

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
